Like the Library and Day Center by RCR Arquitectes, the project forms part of the ProEixample programme for the revitalisation of the district. The new library is part of the programme of existing public buildings (a civic centre and a market), impelling a new nucleus of nearby public services.

The building, featured in Civilities II, received The RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award in 2008. The use of schools as community service centres outside of the class schedule is becoming a more and more habitual tendency to extend activity to these spaces. In this case, by breaking down the programme into two buildings, part of this school becomes a sports centre for the entire community.

This second issue of Civilities is a selection of architectures that are closely related to their location. Some form part of urban regeneration projects while others represent public realm in the middle of a private territory or behave as simple centres of life in a deserted landscape. In other cases, the architecture is added to existing places, to memories and uses that become a stratus of new constructions.
