Vivir arriba: la torre
Entre 1945 y 1951, Mies van de Rohe construyó, en Chicago, dos torres de viviendas de veintiséis plantas a la orilla del lago Michigan. Estas dos torres, números 860 y 880 de Lake Shore Drive, son dos prismas iguales, resultado directo del intento de dar forma a una idea, la del rascacielos de cristal.
Con estos dos edificios, se consiguió identificar el progreso de la tecnología americana con una arquitectura basada en el rigor.

Living on top: the tower
Between 1945 and 1951, Mies van der Rohe built two 26-storey towers on the banks of Lake Michigan in Chicago. These two towers, numbers 860 and 880 on Lake Shore Drive, are two identical prisms, the direct result of an attempt to give shape to an idea, that of the glass skyscraper. With these two buildings, the progress of American technology can be identified with an architecture based on strict constructive principles, on slenderness and transparency.

Rem Koolhaas, en el Centro de Estudiantes del IIT, ha rebanado las
mejillas de un Mies sonrosado y ha ensuciado el candor de la verdad
agustiniana con materiales abyectos. Koolhaas comenta en una
entrevista, que en el Centro de Estudiantes (publicado en a+t 23. Nueva Materialidad I) no emplea una gran
diversidad de materiales, porque al final, igual que Mies, utiliza una
paleta limitada.

In the Students’ Center of the IIT (published in a+t 23. New Materiality I), Rem Koolhaas has hacked off the
rosy cheeks of Mies, soiling the candor of Augustinian truth with
abject materials. In an interview he states that here he doesn’t use a wide range of materials.
In the end, he says, he uses a limited palette, just like Mies.

IIT Chicago, publicado en Nueva Materialidad I
En su primer encargo en América, Mies pone en práctica todo su ideario puritano (véase La condición moral de los materiales, por Javier Mozas) y, adaptándose a la retícula urbana de Chicago, dispone un campus dividido en dos por la vía elevada de la línea de metro.

El nuevo Centro de Estudiantes del Instituto de Tecnología de Illinois, señala la transición de la era de “Dios está en el detalle”, a la de “si no hay dinero, no hay detalles”. Del fetichismo de Mies van der Rohe sobre el aspecto de lo construido y su relación absoluta con la modulación espacial, hemos llegado al deseo de Rem Koolhaas de que los edificios ean condensadores adecuados de las tecnologías existentes y críticos con las relaciones sociales, a la vez que espacios tan complejos que no pueden ser definidos en términos de estática ni en planos, los cuales se revelan incapaces de representar gráficamente esos condicionantes.

The new Student Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology marks the transition from the era of “God is in the detail” to that of “No money, no details”. From Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s fetishism about the appearance of construction and its absolute relationship to the modulation of spatial relations we have arrived at Rem Koolhaas’ desire to make buildings that are appropriate and critical condensers of existing technologies and social relations into spaces so complex that they cannot be defined in static terms and planes that graphically represent those enabling conditions.

Mies van der Rohe tenía la creencia de que el arte de la construcción debía de basarse en los materiales. En el programa docente que envió a Henry T. Heald, decano del Instituto Armour (más tarde se convertiría en el Instituto de Tecnología de Illinois), el 10 de diciembre de 1937, incluía tres categorías, Medios, Fines y Planificación-Creación.

Mies van der Rohe believed that the art of building should be founded on materials. In the syllabus that he sent on 10 December 1937 to Henry T. Heald, dean of the Armour Institute of Technology (which was to become the Illinois Institute of Technology), he outlined three categories: means, purposes, planning and creating.
